Let’s face it: meeting people in person these days can be quite challenging. And with Valentine’s Day coming up, finding a sweetheart is at the forefront of our minds. Yet everyone in the dating pool seems to be glued to apps and screens of all kinds, and the art of in-person courtship is sadly dying. But fear not; there are still haunts in the Big Apple where single people looking for love congregate and converse.

We’ve picked five places around New York City that just might be where your new special someone is waiting to sweep you off your feet and shower you with chocolates. Take a close look at this list. Not all of the spots we chose are probably what you’d expect, but they’ve all been known to attract Manhattan’s best hopeless romantics.

The MoMA PS1

This exhibition space for all types of art is located in Long Island City and connected to one of our favorite spots in all of New York: the Museum of Modern Art. However, it’s hardly a stuffy collection of paintings. The MoMA PS1 regularly hosts music and performance events, drawing in New York’s most artistically minded, cultured bachelors and bachelorettes. Come here if you’re seeking your creative muse.

The Bowery Ballroom

This historic music venue, built in the 1920s, has appeared in films such as Coyote Ugly and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. With some of the best acts in America playing seven nights a week, you can always be sure to run into an interesting stranger while swaying to the tones of indie’s next big superstar. Hit up the Bowery Ballroom if you’re a music lover seeking someone to geek out with.

Concert

The Duplex

The Duplex Piano Bar and Cabaret Theater is exactly what it sounds like. It’s one part piano bar, where plucky performers can sometimes try their chops at open mics. And another part dance lounge: upstairs, patrons can dance the night away to divas past and present. And, of course, there’s the late night parties that draw in New Yorkers from every borough looking to let loose and show off their moves. Come here if you like to sing, dance, and make a fool of yourself, and seek someone with a similar spirit.

Beverly’s

Head over to the Lower East Side for neon lights, original artwork, and acclaimed cocktails. This local hangout is where New Yorkers looking to relax after a long day of work come to take the edge off and really enjoy themselves. Come here if you enjoy drinks and chatting up the person next to you at the bar.

The Strand

Last but not least is The Strand, the famous bookstore located just a block from Union Square. While it may not be the first place you think of when you’re brainstorming places to meet potential suitors, don’t underestimate the romance that floats between shelves of Edgar Allen Poe, Joyce Carol Oates, and Patti Smith. People who come to The Strand logically love books, so you’ve already got one thing in common! And it follows that the hotties browsing in nonfiction are at least literate, if not educated, interesting, and even brilliant!
