Whether for business or pleasure, we have the best travel apps for you!
If you’re like me, I’ll bet you’re planning trips for the upcoming holidays, maybe some business junkets, and even starting to dream about next year’s vacations. I always try to use the latest apps that do anything to make my life easier, so I can spend more time on what really matters — and that goes double for travel. Fortunately, there are many new and updated apps available for those of us on the go. Here are some of the ones I’ve found most useful.
For the Flight:
I love this app because it not only provides information about gate changes and flight delays, it even tells me just how long security lines are at the airport. And if your delays run too long, you’ll even find a handy guide to all the amenities in your terminal (from restaurants to shops to day spas).
Whether you’re flying in coach or up front, this app gives you the inside scoop on the best seat in your cabin. Better than just a seating chart, the app lets you know which rows don’t recline, or what seats are adjacent to the lavatory. Download this app before your trip so you can fly in comfort (or close to it).
For the Hotel:
Hilton Honors app
I use Hilton’s award-winning app, newly updated, every time I travel. With this app, Hilton Honors members like me can use the Digital Key feature introduced last year and choose the exact room they want (near the pool, away from the elevator) or with a view (of the skyline or courtyard). There’s no need to check-in at the front desk; the app does it all for you. Another benefit: I can also request housekeeping, any special requests, or a late checkout by sending a chat message at select hotels up to a day before check-in. No muss, no fuss.
Want to know which hotels are pet-friendly? Or where the best dog parks are for your traveling four-legged friend. With BringFido, you’ll have all the answers at your fingertips.
Available on the App Store
At Your Destination:
Another of this year’s favorites. This app delivers hyper local weather forecasts using state-of-the-art technology to predict when it will rain or snow, down to the minute, at your precise location. Don’t leave home without it.
Free Wi-Fi Finder
This app has more than a half-million hotspots in its database, so whether you’re still at the airport or exploring an unfamiliar downtown, you can search the directory or power on the Wi-Fi scanner to connect on the spot. Remember, though, that everything comes with a price: free Wi-Fi hotspots don’t always have the same security protections you might be used to. Be cautious about what you send or download.
Available on Google Play
“Only connect,” wrote novelist E.M. Forster more than a century ago. If only he’d had this translation and dictionary app, which — with more than 90 languages in its database — rightfully calls itself “your passport to the world.” Perfect for vacationers, business travelers, and students.
Do you need to calculate foreign currencies on the fly? Then this is your go-to app for real-time exchange rates as well as historical charts. Compare multiple currencies and create alerts for what currency you’d like to keep an eye on. Available for iOS devices, Androids, Windows phones, and Blackberries.

After Your Trip:
Confession: I hate doing my expenses, so any app that helps me keep tab of them ranks pretty high in my book. And that’s exactly what Expensify does: “Smartscan” your receipt and the app will code and report the expense. No more lost receipts, no more reimbursement headaches. If your company isn’t using Expensify yet, start bugging your finance department to sign up!
